Alcatraz Island
Alcatraz Island, commonly referred to as simply Alcatraz or
locally as The Rock, is a small island located in the middle of San Francisco Bay in California,
United States. It served as a lighthouse, then a military fortification, then a military prison
followed by a federal prison until 1963. It became a national recreation area in 1972 and received
landmarking designations in 1976 and 1986.
Today, the island is a historic site operated by the National Park Service as part of the Golden
Gate National Recreation Area and is open to tours. Visitors can reach the island by ferry ride
from Pier 33, near Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco
Fishermans's Wharf
San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf is a world famous
tourist attraction and a thriving and vibrant local neighborhood and commercial area. Home to world-class
dining, shopping, hotels and endless entertainment opportunities, the Wharf is truly the place to start
your San Francisco experience.
As the home of San Francisco's fishing fleet, docked along Jefferson Street, Fisherman's Wharf is the
important center of our city's historic fishing industry. Along our neighborhood's "Fish Alley"
you can still see fishermen at work, which is always a fun and unique San Francisco experience.
The Wharf area is also the launching point for Bay cruises and charters.
City of Sausalito
Sausalito is a San Francisco Bay Area city, located in Marin County,
California, United States. The population was 7,330 as of the year 2000 census. The community is situated near the
northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge, and prior to the building of that bridge served as a terminus for rail, car and
ferry traffic. Developed rapidly as a shipbuilding center in World War II, the city's industrial character gave way
in postwar years to a reputation as an artistic enclave, as a picturesque residential community (incorporating
large numbers of houseboats), and as a tourist destination. It is adjacent to, and largely bounded by, the protected
spaces of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
S.F. Palace of Fine Arts
The Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina District of San Francisco,
California is a building originally constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition.
The Palace of Fine Arts has been a favorite wedding location for couples throughout the
San Francisco Bay Area. Many forms of wildlife have made their home there including swans,
ducks (particularly migrating fowl), geese, turtles, frogs, and raccoons.
Army Presidio of S.F.
The Presidio of San Francisco is a park on the northern tip
of the San Francisco Peninsula in San Francisco, California, within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
The park is characterized by many wooded areas, hills, and scenic vistas overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge,
San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It was recognized by Congress as a National Historic Landmark in 1962.
The Exploratorium, a hands-on science museum, is located in the Palace of Fine Arts inside the Presidio.
S.F. Ferry Building
The Ferry Building is a terminal for ferries that travel across the San Francisco Bay and a shopping center located on The Embarcadero in San Francisco, California. On top of the building is a large clock tower, which can be seen from Market Street, a main thoroughfare of the city. Architecturally, the clock tower was modeled after the 12th century Giralda bell tower in Seville, Spain. During daylight, on every full and half-hour, the clock bell can be heard chiming portions of the Westminster Quarters.
Lombard Street
Lombard Street is best known for the one way section on Russian Hill between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets, in which the roadway has eight sharp turns (or switchbacks) that have earned the street the distinction of being "the crookedest [most winding] street in world."The switchbacks design, first suggested by property owner Carl Henry and instituted in 1922, was born out of necessity in order to reduce the hill's natural 27% grade,[citation needed] which was too steep for most vehicles to climb and a serious hazard to pedestrians used to a more reasonable sixteen-degree incline. The crooked section of the street, which is about 1/4 mile (400 m) long, is reserved for one-way traffic traveling east (downhill) and is paved with red bricks. The speed limit here is a mere 5 mph (8 km/h).
S.F. City Hall
The city hall building is the site of some of San Francisco's finest moments. In 1954 Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio were married here. In the early 21st century, over 100 same-sex couples were married by Mayor Gavin Newsom in the foyer. The Renaissance architecture rivals some of the country's most historical structures. Two Parisian architects designed and constructed the building from 1913-1915. The dome is based on the one crowning St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Visitors can pick up brochures and take a self-guided tour between 8a-5p, Monday through Friday. A small store, open during normal business hours, sells traditional San Francisco souvenirs including T-shirts, posters and postcards
San Francisco Chinatown
San Francisco's Chinatown is the oldest Chinatown in North America.
It is also the largest Chinese community outside of Asia. Established in the 1850s, it has featured significantly
in popular culture venues such as film, music, photography and literature. It is one of the largest and most
prominent centres of Chinese activity outside of China.
Chinatown has been experiencing an economic upturn in recent years. Chinatown is now a major economic boon to
the city as one of its top tourist attractions. It has drawn more visitors than the Golden Gate Bridge.
San Francisco Union Square
The name "Union Square" stems from the fact that the area was once used for rallies and support for the Union Army during the Civil War. Today, this one-block plaza and nearby area is one of the largest collection of department stores, upscale boutiques, tourist trinket shops, art galleries, and salons in the Western United States, which continue to make Union Square a major tourist draw, a vital, cosmopolitan place in downtown San Francisco, and one of the world's premier shopping districts.
S.F. Moscone Center
The Moscone Center is the largest convention and exhibition complex in San Francisco, California. It comprises three main halls: Two underground halls underneath Yerba Buena Gardens, known as Moscone North and Moscone South, and a three-level Moscone West exhibition hall across 4th Street. It was initially built in 1981 by architects Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum as one single hall, Moscone South, and named after George Moscone, a former mayor of San Francisco who was assassinated in 1978.
.
S.F. Crissy Fields
Crissy Field is a park in San Francisco. Crissy Field was
originally an airfield part of the United States' Presidio Army Base. The Presidio ceased all military
operations and the base became part of the federal Golden Gate National Recreation Area under the Base Closure Act,
in the 1990s.
Today, most of Crissy Field's buildings from its 1920s glory years remain standing,
including the U. S. Coast Guard station and pier. Some buildings are in private use with businesses
leasing hangars and offices and families renting the former officer housing.
The area also has museums, cafés, gift shops and bike/pedestrian lanes. One can spend a pleasant
morning or afternoon biking through the area on the way to the Golden Gate Bridge and taking a break
to enjoy a snack.
The area also provides views of the city, Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. The beach at the east
end of Crissy Field East Beach) remains popular for windsurfers and kite surfers. The summer winds which build
in the early afternoon make for good sailing.
