Santa Cruz, California
Santa Cruz Califoria is widely popular for its idyllic beaches and Coastal Redwoods and became a very popular resort community. It is presently known for its alternative community lifestyles and liberal political leanings, Santa Cruz is a haven for many sub-cultures and counter-cultures.[
Monterey Bay Aquarium
Monterey Bay Aquarium
The Monterey Bay Aquarium, which is located on the site of a former sardine cannery on Cannery Row in Monterey, California, is one of the largest aquariums in the world. It has an annual attendance of 1.8 million and holds 35,000 plants and animals representing 623 species.
Among the aquarium's numerous exhibits, two are of particular note. The centerpiece of the Ocean's Edge wing is a 33-foot (10-m) high tank for viewing California coastal marine life. In this tank, the aquarium was the first in the world to grow live California Giant Kelp using a wave machine at the top of the tank (water movement is a necessary precondition for keeping Giant Kelp, which absorbs nutrients from surrounding water and requires turbidity), allowing sunlight in through the open tank top, and pumping in raw seawater. The second exhibit of note is a one million gallon tank in the Outer Bay Wing which features one of the world's largest single-paned windows (crafted by a Japanese company, the window is actually four panes seamlessly glued together through a proprietary process).
Sealife on exhibit includes stingrays, jellyfish, sea otters, and numerous other native marine species, which can be viewed above and below the waterline. For displaying jellyfish, the MBA uses an aquarium called a Kreisel tank which creates a circular flow to support and suspend the jellies. Visitors are able to inspect the creatures of the kelp forest at several levels in the building.
Monterey Cannery
Cannery Row is the waterfront street in the New Monterey section of Monterey, California, the site of a number of now-defunct sardine canning factories. The street name, formerly a nickname for Ocean View Avenue, is now official.
Today the area around Cannery Row is a marine sanctuary and is home to a large resurgent population of California sea lions. The street is now a tourist attraction with many restaurants and hotels, many of which are located in former cannery buildings, and a few historical attractions. A few privately owned and operated fishing companies still exist on Cannery Row, housed on piers located a short distance from the historic district frequented by tourists. In recent years, Cannery Row has become increasingly popular among sport fishermen due to extensive public fishing facilities (sinks, countertops, ice, docking).
The Monterey Bay Aquarium is located at the north end of Cannery Row, in a former cannery.
Movie - "The Promise"
The Universal Studios 1979 film tells about the rich-boy/poor-girl story (along the lines of "Love Story") of Michael Hillyard and Nancy McAllister, two college students very much in love with one another, much to the chagrin of Hillyard's disapproving mother, Marion.
Michael and Nancy, visiting a park overlooking the Pacific Ocean (The Lone Cypress), hide a costume jewelry necklace under a large rock, and promise that they will love each other as long as it remains undisturbed (which they of course expect to be forever).
They were involved in a serious car wreck, with the young girl's face severely injured. In order to get the necessary surgery, the mother of the young man injured in the accident offers a deal to the young woman - to stay out of her son's life permanently, and in return, get the plastic surgery to restore her face. What comes after that is something none of them expected.
The film features a haunting music score - "I'll Never Say Goodbye" by David Shire. The theme song was written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman, entitled "The Promise", and performed by Melissa Manchester. The tune has been covered by several other artists, includinga duet with Ogie Alcasid and Regine Velasquez. Sharon Cuneta tells audiences that she and her husband fell in love because of the song.
Carmel, California
Carmel-by-the-Sea, usually called simply Carmel, is a small town in Monterey County, California, United States. Situated on the Monterey Peninsula, the town is known for its rich artistic history.
In 1906, the San Francisco Call devoted a full page to the "artists, poets and writers of Carmel-by-the-Sea" and in 1910 it reported that 60 percent of Carmel's houses were built by citizens who were "devoting their lives to work connected to the aesthetic arts."
Early City Councils were dominated by artists and the town has had several mayors who were poets or actors including Herbert Heron, founder of the Forest Theater, and actor-director Clint Eastwood, who was mayor for one term, from 1986 to 1988.
Little Saigon - San Jose
Little Saigon is a name given to any of several overseas Vietnamese immigrant and descendant communities outside Vietnam, usually in the United States. Saigon is the former name of the capital of the former South Vietnam, where a large number of first-generation Vietnamese immigrants originate.
The well-established and largest Vietnamese-American enclaves, not all of which are called Little Saigon, are located in Orange County, California; San Jose; and Houston, Texas. Somewhat smaller communities also exist, including the comparatively nascent Vietnamese commercial districts in San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento, and Orlando. Additionally, Vietnamese Americans of Chinese lineage have also established businesses and bringing distinctively Vietnamese elements to most Chinatowns, essentially blurring the line between a "Chinatown" and a "Little Saigon"; some examples would include the Chinatowns of Las Vegas, Chicago, Boston, Bellaire in Houston, or Honolulu.
Santana Row
Santana Row is an upscale shopping center in San Jose, California. Westfield Valley Fair is located just to its north, on the other side of Stevens Creek Boulevard, and the Winchester Mystery House just to the west, across Winchester Boulevard.
Santana Row is home to many luxury restaurants, outlets, multi-million dollar condominiums, spas and salons and a 213 room boutique hotel, located in the heart of Santana Row. Several retailers including Gucci, Burberry, Salvatore Ferragamo,BCBG Max Azria, Crate and Barrel, Diesel, H&M , Ann Taylor LOFT, Cole Haan, Furla, Anthropologie, Tommy Bahama, Urban Outfitters, and Brooks Brothers are also located in Santana Row.
Santana Row was intended to be Northern California's answer to Rodeo Drive, which features one of the highest concentration of luxury retailers in the Western United States. The shopping center is now the fourth highest ranking mall in California and the highest ranking in the Bay Area by sales per square foot.
